Software Engineer, Developer Experience Platform

Department: Interfaces

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, Hybrid

We’re SmartThings, one of the leading IoT ecosystems in the world, creating the most effortless way for anyone to create a smart home. Were a wholly owned subsidiary of Samsung with corporate offices in Minneapolis and the Bay Area.

More than 430 million people worldwide use SmartThings to control and manage their connected life. As a founding member of Matter, we are a leader in the industry to help make smart homes more secure, reliable and seamless to use. Come be a part of the leading edge of IoT innovation!

We are looking for a Full Stack Software Engineer to join our Developer Center team. Device makers around the world integrate their hardware with the SmartThings platform, and the Developer Center is where that journey happens, from first API call through Works with SmartThings certification. Its how developers around the world experience our platform, and our teams mission is to make that journey clear, accurate, and easy to use.

This role owns the documentation developers rely on and helps build the console they use alongside it. Youll write the integration guides and API reference at developer.smartthings.com/docs, own that sites frontend and publishing pipeline, and contribute features and code to the Developer Center itself. Youll collaborate across product and engineering teams to deliver a seamless, high-quality developer experience for the global SmartThings platform.

Key Responsibilities

This position is a hybrid role, based onsite 3 days a week at our office in Minneapolis, MN.

In this role, your primary responsibilities will include the following:
  • Own the docs site on the SmartThings Developer Center end to end: Docusaurus theme customization, MDX components, versioning, search configuration, CI/CD, and analytics.
  • Write and maintain technical documentation (API docs, SDK guides, and integration tutorials) for external developers integrating with the SmartThings platform.
  • Establish documentation standards, and maintain quality through linters, AI-powered authoring tools, and participation in code and documentation reviews.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with platform engineers, product managers, and designers to build new features and enhance existing ones for the Developer Center.
  • Use AI tooling to accelerate drafting, research, and content audits, with technical verification before anything ships.
  • Proactively communicate progress and challenges to stakeholders and team.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Inclusive Hiring Practices

Don’t meet all desired requirements? Studies have shown that some people are less likely to apply to jobs unless they meet every single desired qualification. At SmartThings, we are dedicated to building a diverse, inclusive, and authentic workplace, so if you’re excited about this role but your past experience doesn’t align perfectly in the job description, we encourage you to apply anyway. You may be just the right candidate for this or other roles.

What You Bring On Day One (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 2+ years combined across software engineering and technical writing.

  • Experience with Node.js and frameworks such as Express or Next.js

  • Strong information architecture instincts: can take a sprawling topic and give it a structure a stranger can navigate.

Desired Skills
  • Familiarity with Java or Kotlin.
  • Self-motivated with a strong intellectual curiosity.
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning, with the ability to quickly acquire and apply new skills in a fast-evolving environment.
  • The ability to clearly articulate and constructively discuss both technical and non-technical decisions to advance team standards and best practices.
  • A collaborative mindset, actively sharing knowledge to elevate the skills and performance of the broader team.
  • Experience building with AI and authoring content consumed by AI agents.
  • Experience with SEO, generative engine optimization (GEO), web accessibility (WCAG), and Google Analytics.
