What youll do

• Build and maintain features in the service that powers every BigCommerce storefront, working with product managers and partner teams to shape the requirements and design the solution before building and releasing it
• Add and extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields, following our schema guidelines so changes stay backward compatible for headless storefronts and third party integrations
• Help evolve the storefront service to support AI driven shopping, so that agents and shopping assistants can browse, build carts, and check out for shoppers
• Investigate and fix production issues, and improve performance and reliability in the areas of the service you work on
• Review code from teammates and the other engineering teams that contribute to the storefront service, and grow your design skills through design reviews and pairing with senior engineers

Who Are You

• 5+ years of experience building backend services that run in production
• Education: Preferred minimum Bachelors degree in CS, EE, SW, CE, MIS; or equivalent experience
• Production experience with Scala or Kotlin preferred; backend engineers experienced in other languages (e.g., Java, Go, etc.) who are eager to learn Scala are encouraged to apply
• Experience working with product managers or other stakeholders to turn requirements into a technical design, and delivering it to production
• Working knowledge of HTTP fundamentals such as caching headers, cookies and sessions, and timeouts
• Familiarity with GraphQL APIs
• Familiarity with service to service communication and caching (e.g., gRPC, Redis, etc.)
• Experience debugging production issues using metrics, traces, and logs (e.g., Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Sentry, etc.)
• Familiarity with releasing changes safely through feature flags and gradual rollouts
• Experience writing automated tests and working with CI/CD pipelines
• Uses AI coding assistants as a regular part of development (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, etc.), and reviews AI generated code with the same care as code written by hand
• Interest in how AI agents use APIs (e.g., MCP, tool calling, etc.)

Work Where You Thrive

(Pay Transparency Range: $116,000.00 - $195,000.00)

Compensation Transparency

The national base salary range for this role is posted above in this job post.

Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant experience, skills, qualifications and geographic location. We also consider internal equity to help ensure fair and consistent pay practices across our teams.
