Senior System Architect

Department: System Engineering

Employment Type: Full Time

Location: Southampton, UK, Hybrid

This role is part of AccelerComms Systems Engineering team and reports to the Principal System Architect. Working closely with algorithm, software, FPGA and ASIC engineers, you will help define communications products and IP, translating system, product and customer requirements into practical architectures across software, FPGA and ASIC technologies. You will remain involved throughout the development lifecycle, from requirements and architectural analysis through to implementation support, verification and customer integration.

This role would suit an experienced systems engineer or architect who enjoys combining communications theory, system architecture and practical implementation, both within engineering development and in real-world customer applications.

Key Responsibilities

A significant aspect of the role involves the continued development of AccelerComms communications IP across FPGA and ASIC deployment targets. You will evaluate architectural options and implementation trade-offs, ensuring that system requirements can be translated into efficient and scalable implementations. Experience of ASIC development for communications, modem or signal-processing products, with a good understanding of the architectural and implementation considerations involved.

Internally, you will contribute to requirements capture, system decomposition, interface definition, architectural modelling, performance analysis and verification planning. You will work closely with FPGA and ASIC designers to explore hardware architecture, implementation strategy and trade-offs including performance, resource usage and power.

You will also have opportunities to work directly with customers and partners to understand their requirements, explore how AccelerComm technology can be applied and support integration into their products. This may include technical discussions and collaborative studies around system, FPGA or ASIC implementation, with customer insight helping inform the continued development of our products and IP.

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise

Essential

· Strong understanding of 3GPP 5G NR, physical-layer processing and wireless communication systems.
· Experience in communications signal processing, modem design and radio systems.
· Proven ability to define, analyse and manage system and product requirements.
· Experience developing system architecture definitions, including hardware/software partitioning, interface definition and high-level architecture design.
· Ability to evaluate architectural and algorithm trade-offs, including performance, throughput, latency and resource requirements.
· Experience of ASIC development for communications, modem or signal-processing products, with a good understanding of the architectural and implementation considerations involved.
· Strong understanding of FPGA and ASIC implementation trade-offs, including performance, resources, power and verification.
· Proficiency in MATLAB, Python and C++ for modelling, analysis and development.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work across multidisciplinary engineering teams.

Desirable

· Experience developing communications IP for FPGA or ASIC implementation.
· Experience of satellite or non-terrestrial network (NTN) communications systems.
· Experience of hardware-accelerated communications or digital signal processing implementations.
· Experience working directly with customers or partners on requirements, technical studies or product integration.
· Experience contributing to product roadmaps, technology strategy or long-term architectural planning.
· Direct experience taking communications, modem or signal-processing products from FPGA-based implementation towards ASIC deployment.
· Good understanding of the process of fixed-point design, modelling and implementation.

Job Benefits

We pay competitive salaries which depend on skills and experience.

We offer a bonus scheme which pays up to 20% of salary annually, depending on performance. This is in addition to EMI share options, issued periodically. We offer a range of good quality company benefits including pension and private health insurance.
