Description

Our client is an established commercial masonry contractor in the eastern United States. They self-perform the full masonry scope on commercial and institutional work: CMU, clay brick, cast stone and precast, stone veneer, terracotta, thin veneer, and rain screen systems, along with the through-wall flashing, air barrier, and insulation that keeps those walls dry.

You turn the architects and engineers documents into drawings a mason can actually build from, and those packages go out to the general contractor, the architect, and the engineer for approval.

The real value of this seat is not drafting speed. It is catching the conflict between the architectural set and the structural set before it reaches the field, and knowing the difference between a question you can answer and one that needs an RFI. You work a US Eastern schedule, largely on your own, with nobody looking over your shoulder. The pay reflects the judgement, not the keystrokes.

Key Responsibilities

Masonry Shop Drawings

• Prepare masonry shop drawings for commercial projects: plans, elevations, sections, details, and enlarged views.
• Detail CMU, brick, stone, veneer, reinforced masonry, and other masonry systems.
• Show coursing, wall types, openings, control and expansion joints, reinforcing, embeds, flashing, shelf angles, and lintels.
• Develop layouts for masonry walls, partitions, elevations, and exterior facade systems.
• Incorporate the architectural and structural requirements so the drawings reflect the specifications and the approved design.
• Prepare packages for submission to the general contractor, architect, and engineer.

Drawing Review & Coordination

• Review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings for conditions affecting masonry.
• Coordinate masonry with structural steel, concrete, precast, storefront, curtain wall, windows, doors, and roofing.
• Identify discrepancies and conflicts between the architectural and structural documents—the part of the job that pays for itself.
• Review dimensions, elevations, wall locations, openings, and support conditions, and coordinate masonry openings and penetrations with other trades.
• Identify constructability issues and recommend practical solutions.
• Stay on top of the latest drawing revisions and bring approved changes into the shop drawings.

Architectural & Structural Detailing

• Interpret architectural plans, elevations, sections, wall sections, and details.
• Interpret structural drawings and identify what they require of the masonry.
• Detail masonry reinforcement, lintels, bond beams, grouted cells, anchors, ties, embeds, and structural connections.
• Detail flashing, weeps, drainage cavities, waterproofing interfaces, and moisture management components.
• Coordinate shelf angles, relieving angles, embeds, and other support systems.
• Keep details compliant with the specifications and applicable codes.

Shop Drawing Submittals

• Prepare complete packages coordinated with the specifications and contract requirements.
• Incorporate architect, engineer, and general contractor comments, and issue revisions promptly.
• Maintain revision histories and drawing logs, tracking each drawing through to approval.
• Keep organized electronic records of current and superseded drawings.

Field & Project Support

• Work with project managers and superintendents on masonry questions and field conditions.
• Revise drawings to reflect approved changes when field conditions require it.
• Help resolve conflicts between masonry installation and other trades.
• Support field personnel on shop drawings and details, and help teams interpret approved drawings during construction.
• Assist with RFI preparation where the contract documents fall short.
• Take part in coordination meetings when detailing issues need working through.

Design Changes & Coordination

• Review revised architectural and structural drawings for impacts on the masonry scope.
• Update shop drawings to reflect approved design changes.
• Identify changes that affect quantities, labor, materials, sequencing, or constructability.
• Communicate significant changes to project management and help document them for change orders.

Quality Control

• Run a quality-control review of every package before it is submitted.
• Verify dimensions, elevations, wall locations, openings, details, and references.
• Confirm that plans, elevations, sections, and details agree and represent the installation intended.
• Follow the company drafting standards and the project-specific requirements.
• Review drawings for coordination with other trades before release.

Requirements

• Three to seven years producing architectural, structural, or masonry shop drawings.
• Proficiency with AutoCAD. Not negotiable, and it will be verified.
• Strong knowledge of commercial masonry construction and experience detailing CMU, brick, stone, veneer, and reinforced masonry systems.
• A genuine ability to read architectural and structural construction documents and to spot where the two do not agree.
• Strong understanding of architectural and structural detailing, masonry practices and installation methods, and working knowledge of specifications and project documentation.
• Exceptional attention to detail and spatial reasoning to picture a construction condition in three dimensions from flat documents.
• Strong written and verbal English. You will be writing RFIs and replying to superintendents across a twelve-hour gap.
• The ability to work independently, run several packages at once, and hold to submittal deadlines without being chased.
• A computer that can genuinely run AutoCAD and a stable internet connection with a backup.

Preferred Qualifications

• A bachelors degree in architecture, architectural technology, engineering, construction technology, or a related field.
• Experience working directly for a masonry contractor, producing masonry shop drawings for commercial projects.
• Revit or other BIM software.
• Familiarity with adhered and anchored stone, cast stone and thin brick.
• Knowledge of TMS 402/602, building codes and masonry standards, and experience with structural masonry and reinforcing.
• Experience coordinating with structural steel, concrete, precast, curtain wall and storefront.
• Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam, or similar construction management and document-control software.
• Architectural license or registration. A plus, and genuinely not required.

Tools & Software

• AutoCAD—the primary platform, used every working day.
• Revit or other BIM software—preferred, and increasingly how documents arrive.
• Bluebeam Revu—markups, measurement, and document comparison across revisions.
• Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud or a GCs own project portal, for drawings, submittals, and RFIs.
• Microsoft Teams and OneDrive for communication and file sharing.

• You take a review markup as information rather than as criticism, and you say so when you think one is wrong.
• You would rather a package go out two days late and correct than on time and guessed at.
