Senior Drafting Engineer - Remote

Location: Remote (United States)

Department: ENG

QE Solar is seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Drafter specializing in utility-scale solar photovoltaic projects. This position provides senior-level drafting expertise and technical ownership for engineering drawings and documentation used throughout the design, construction, commissioning, repowering, and ongoing operation of large-scale solar facilities.

The ideal candidate has advanced AutoCAD capabilities, extensive knowledge of utility-scale solar layouts and electrical drawing packages, and the judgment to translate complex engineering concepts, field information, redlines, surveys, and technical specifications into accurate, construction-ready deliverables. This individual works closely with engineers, project managers, field personnel, operations teams, clients, vendors, and external stakeholders while helping establish drafting standards and supporting the development of junior team members.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare, revise, and maintain engineering drawings for utility-scale solar PV projects.

• Serve as a senior drafting resource for complex utility-scale solar projects and provide technical guidance throughout the drawing-development process.

• Lead drafting deliverables for multiple concurrent projects from initial design through issued-for-construction and final as-built documentation.

• Develop complete and accurate drawing packages from engineering sketches, redlines, specifications, field measurements, survey information, and existing documentation.

• Produce and update overall site plans, equipment layouts, PV array and tracker layouts, DC collection system layouts, and AC collection system layouts.

• Prepare underground conduit and trench plans, cable routing plans, wire schedules, single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, grounding plans, and bonding plans.

• Prepare equipment pad details, foundation details, inverter layouts, transformer layouts, combiner box layouts, switchgear layouts, substation drawings, and interconnection drawings.

• Support civil grading plans, access-road plans, drainage drawings, as-built drawings, and record drawings as required.

• Incorporate engineer, client, vendor, and field-team redlines accurately and within established deadlines.

• Review drawings for completeness, consistency, constructability, formatting, dimensions, and compliance with applicable drafting standards.

• Perform senior-level quality-control reviews of drawing packages prepared by other drafters and coordinate corrections before engineering approval or external issuance.

• Develop, maintain, and improve drafting standards, templates, title blocks, symbols, layer conventions, libraries, and quality-control procedures.

• Support permit, issued-for-review, issued-for-construction, and as-built drawing packages.

• Maintain drawing logs, revision histories, title blocks, file structures, naming conventions, and document-control records.

• Coordinate with engineering and operations teams to resolve drawing discrepancies and obtain missing technical information.

• Update drawings to reflect field changes, equipment substitutions, design revisions, and final installed conditions.

• Assist with quantity takeoffs, equipment schedules, bill-of-material information, and other project documentation.

• Reference aerial imagery, topographic surveys, GIS data, equipment specifications, and site documentation when developing drawings.

• Support troubleshooting, retrofit, repowering, and corrective-maintenance projects by preparing drawings of existing and proposed conditions.

• Participate in internal drawing reviews and project coordination meetings.

• Identify drafting risks, inconsistencies, constructability concerns, and missing information, and proactively coordinate solutions with the appropriate stakeholders.

• Manage multiple projects and competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.

• Follow QE Solar safety, quality, confidentiality, and document-control requirements.

• Perform other related drafting and engineering-support duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent training in drafting, engineering technology, electrical design, renewable energy, or a related field.

• At least five years of professional drafting experience supporting solar, renewable energy, electrical, civil, or power-generation projects.

• At least three years of direct experience supporting utility-scale solar PV projects.

• Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and the preparation of complete professional engineering drawing packages.

• Ability to interpret electrical single-line diagrams, site plans, equipment layouts, schematics, technical specifications, surveys, and engineering redlines.

• Understanding of drafting standards, drawing organization, scaling, dimensions, layers, symbols, blocks, external references, and revision control.

• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, consistent work.

• Ability to manage multiple assignments in a deadline-driven environment.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with remote engineering, operations, and field teams.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 applications.

• Demonstrated ability to review the work of others, provide constructive technical feedback, and maintain drafting quality across multiple projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Seven or more years of drafting experience, including significant utility-scale solar or renewable-energy experience.

• Experience supporting solar facilities of 20 MW or greater.

• Experience with battery energy storage systems, substations, high-voltage systems, or utility interconnections.

• Familiarity with solar trackers, inverters, transformers, combiner boxes, medium-voltage collection systems, and plant-control equipment.

• Working knowledge of the National Electrical Code, applicable IEEE standards, utility requirements, and common solar-industry design practices.

• Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam Revu, PVcase, PVSyst, ArcGIS, or similar engineering and design tools.

• Experience developing as-built drawings from field markups, photographs, drone imagery, surveys, and inspection documentation.

• Familiarity with operations and maintenance activities for utility-scale solar facilities.

• Experience working within an engineering document-control or quality-assurance process.

• Experience supporting engineering, procurement, and construction organizations or independent power producers.

• Previous experience mentoring junior drafters or coordinating drafting workloads and deliverables.
