Job Description
Want to learn how a Fortune 100 insurer decides which businesses to insure, and how to price that risk? Join Nationwide’s Small Commercial Underwriting team for the summer. Underwriting is where data, sharp judgement and trusted agent relationships come together to grow a profitable book and business..
This is a hands-on internship built for curious, motivated students who like to analyze problems, ask good questions, and see how their work drives real outcomes. It offers a unique opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, contribute to real business initiatives, and develop skills that will serve you throughout your career.
Key Responsibilities
As an intern, you will:
Learn the Underwriting Process: Shadow underwriters as they review new and renewal business, evaluate risk, and decide whether and how to insure a business.
Support Risk Evaluation & Pricing: Help gather and review account information, look at exposures, and see how pricing and coverage decisions are made.
Analyze Risk & Portfolio Data: Review data to spot trends in risk, profitability, and retention that help underwriters make better decisions.
Support Agency Relationships: See how underwriters’ partner with agents to win and keep business, and help prepare for those conversations.
Explore AI & Automation: Learn how AI and automation speed up file review and routine tasks and help test or research these tools.
Create Visuals & Presentations: Build simple dashboards or slide decks to share findings clearly, including your end-of-summer project to leaders.
Collaborate Across Teams: Work alongside portfolio managers, sales partners, and analysts to understand how different roles contribute to business outcomes.
Grow Professionally: Attend team meetings, training sessions, and intern events to build industry knowledge, confidence, and a network.
Own a Real Project: Take on a project tied to an actual underwriting priority and present your findings and recommendations to Small Commercial leaders.

Nationwide does not participate in the Stem OPT Extension program. At its sole discretion, Nationwide determines whether to offer sponsorship for qualifying positions based on business need and budget. However, it is not usually available for entry level roles.
Nationwide pays on a geographic-specific salary structure and placement within the actual starting salary range for this position will be determined by a number of factors including the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; the scope, complexity and location of the role as well as the cost of labor in the market; and other conditions of employment.The national hourly pay range for Nationwide Internships is: $23 - $50
