POSITION PURPOSE:
This is a full-time, exempt position reporting to the Senior Manager of Market Analysis. The Market Operations Analyst quantitative reasoning, problem solving, operations research methods, and programming skills to assist the market operations team in optimization battery energy storage system dispatch (charging and discharging) across the Key Capture Energy fleet.
Responsibilities may include strategizing day-to-day power market operations, supporting real-time operations by monitoring market conditions and strategy performance to help ensure the best available strategy is continuously deployed, troubleshooting market operations in real-time, building/editing mathematical models that represent battery energy storage system and/or hybrid solar + storage system operation, and building reports summarizing performance of trading strategies. The ideal candidate is a creative problem solver who can develop the technical skills to independently run projects from the brainstorm phase through to a final work-product.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build a fundamental understand of daily energy market operations in various jurisdictions.
- Monitor real-time market conditions, asset availability, and strategy performance to identify emerging risks and opportunities.
- Support the management of company assets day-to-day, including via bid submission and code debugging.
- Understand factors impacting electricity prices and collaborate with the team to improve price forecasts and ingest into bidding models. Develop and assess new models as necessary to improve PNL.
- Design, support, and contribute to the build-out of automated power market bidding/trading strategies using Python and SQL.
- Analyze and manipulate datasets in MS SQL Server. Collaborate with the development team to support the build out of necessary infrastructure for analytics work.
- Build PowerBI dashboards that transform data into information that informs market decisions.
- Build analytical reports and models to support energy trading.
- All other duties as required.
WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIREMENTS:
- 0-2 years of energy industry or analytical experience.
- Bachelors degree in: engineering, math, economics, computer science, chemistry, physics, finance, business, or related field.
- Interest in clean energy and power markets.
- Exposure to programming (SQL, Python, R, MATLAB, or similar).
- Experience working with large data sets a plus.
- Very motivated self-starter.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
