Straight from IQM Quantum Computers’s careers page. Apply on the company site — no recruiter, no middleman.

At IQM, we build world-leading quantum computers for the well-being of humankind. We design systems to tackle computational challenges beyond the practical limits of classical machines. Our work sits at the edge of science and engineering. Its complex, demanding, and deeply collaborative. We turn deep research into reliable, full-stack systems that drive discoveries in fields like medicine, energy, and technology, reshaping how the world computes.

Join the team that gives quantum a heartbeat.

The work

We are looking for a Quantum Engineer (Mid-level to Senior) with a scientific mindset to develop new readout techniques for superconducting quantum processors and to support our quantum error correction (QEC) efforts towards scalable quantum computing.

The role is R&D-focused: you will develop novel methods to improve readout performance, not only through new calibration methods but also by improving QPU design and hardware. You will work closely with experienced engineers and researchers in our Readout team across Espoo and Munich, and with our QPU design, fabrication, calibration, software, and error correction teams.

This position sits at the intersection of quantum physics research, QPU hardware and software, offering strong opportunities for learning and growth. You will work on state-of-the-art quantum computers.

The role is based at our headquarters in Espoo, Finland. Working from our Munich office in Germany is also possible.

What you’ll actually do
  • Develop and test new readout techniques for quantum processors, including mid-circuit and terminal readout

  • Develop new calibration methods and benchmarking workflows that our calibration teams use every day

  • Turn your findings into improvements in QPU design and hardware

  • Implement your methods in our software framework and validate them on real quantum hardware

  • Analyze experimental data and identify what limits readout performance

  • Model and simulate readout using theory such as circuit QED, to guide new methods and QPU designs

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (hardware, software, fabrication)

  • Document results, present findings internally and externally, and contribute to patent applications for new methods

What we’re looking for
  • Hands-on or theoretical experience with qubits of any modality, such as running qubit measurements or circuit QED theory

  • Experience with software development, including Python and its ecosystem; familiarity with git version control is a plus

  • Solid foundation in physics or a related field

  • Ph.D. in Physics or a related field, or equivalent industry experience

  • Proven high-level scientific publications

  • A scientific mindset: you want to develop new methods, not just apply existing ones

  • Ability to learn quickly and solve problems independently

  • Good reporting and documentation skills

Nice-to-have
  • Exposure to quantum error correction

  • Experimental lab work or measurement systems

  • Cryogenic microwave engineering

  • Experience with parametric amplifiers, such as JPAs or TWPAs

Why IQM?
  • Full-stack quantum computing: From quantum hardware to software layers and beyond, we build across the full-stack.

  • High-performance playground: We aim high, and we know sustainable performance only works when life outside work does too—hybrid setups, flexible hours.

  • Never the smartest: Expect to learn constantly. You wont always be the smartest person in the room, and thats the point.

  • Approachable leadership: Flat hierarchy, direct access. Feel free to approach any leaders. Theyre friendlier than they look!

  • The sweet spot: Big enough to matter. Small enough to move fast. Growing between a startup and a corporation. We’re in the phase where top performers get noticed.

  • Bigger than IQM: Our people build know-how for the entire quantum ecosystem. We publish papers, run hackathons, and help shape a market thats still being defined.

The future of computing won’t build itself. You might be one of the few who do.

Well start interviews and move forward with hiring as soon as we meet strong candidates. Please submit your application soon.
