About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Payroll Tax Specialist to serve as a subject matter expert on employment tax compliance for the US and Canada. In this role, youll resolve tax notices, manage registrations and exceptions, process tax adjustments (including W2c and T4 amendments), and handle high-volume employee inquiries — all while ensuring compliance with federal, state, provincial, and local regulations.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

• Research, investigate, and resolve US and Canada federal, state/provincial, and local payroll tax notices

• Track issues through to resolution and maintain documentation to support audits

• Process payroll tax adjustments, W2c corrections, and T4 amendments accurately and on time

• Ensure accurate tax treatment for employees across multiple states/provinces

• Manage new tax jurisdiction and entity registrations in Smart Compliance

• Resolve system exceptions and validate tax setups to ensure accurate processing

• Support quarter-end and year-end payroll tax activities, including W-2/T4 preparation, reconciliations, filings, and validation

• Manage and resolve high-volume employee tax/payroll inquiries, delivering excellent customer service

• Support employment tax audits, including documentation and timely responses

• Identify and recommend process improvements to reduce risk and increase efficiency

• Maintain flexibility to support peak periods (quarter-end, year-end) and special projects

Required Qualifications

• 3-5 years of hands-on experience in employment/payroll tax for both the USA and Canada

• Well-versed in Workday and ADP Smart Compliance, including managing tax registrations and resolving exceptions

• Hands-on experience with quarter-end and year-end payroll tax processes, including filings, reconciliations, and reporting

• Experience processing payroll tax adjustments, W2c corrections, and T4 amendments

• Proven ability to manage high-volume employee ticket/inquiry resolution with strong customer service orientation

• Fluent English — strong written and verbal communication skills

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to organize and interpret payroll/tax data

• Assist with workers compensation, audits, liaising with CRA and MRQ as well as experience running year end.

• Comfortable navigating ambiguity and shifting regulatory requirements

• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint

• Team player who contributes to a positive, collaborative work environment

 

Education/Certification: Accounting background preferred; FPC or PCP certification desirable

 

For candidates applying to a Canadian-based position, the pay range for this position is between $72,200.00 and $120,400.00 CAD. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate’s experience, education, and skill set. 

Bonus eligibility: 5% annual bonus potential
