Job Title: Head of Engineering, Internal Applications and Tools
Department: Product Development & Delivery
About the Role:
As the Head of Engineering for Internal Applications and Tools, you will lead engineering teams responsible for building and evolving Unite Us’ internal developer platform. This includes identity and access management, auditing and compliance, interoperability services, and front-end development frameworks. You’ll act as both a technical leader and product owner, prioritizing the needs of internal development teams as your primary customers.This role requires an enterprise mindset, a deep understanding of platform engineering, and the ability to lead through influence and collaboration. You will define strategy, ensure secure and scalable architecture, and foster a high-performing culture that empowers engineering teams to work more efficiently and securely.
What Youll Do:
Strategic and Technical Leadership
- Define and execute the strategy for the Internal Developer Platform, aligning with business priorities, regulatory requirements, and developer needs.
- Lead architectural planning and guide adoption of secure, scalable platform solutions that enable efficient front-end and back-end development.
- Ensure systems are compliant with industry standards (e.g., HIPAA, HITECH) and evolving interoperability protocols (FHIR, HL7, OAuth 2.0).
- Oversee the improvement and maintenance of React-based frameworks that enable fast, consistent, and compliant front-end development.
Team Leadership and Talent Development
- Lead and develop a high-performing group of engineering managers and their teams, upholding a high bar for performance and accountability.
- Cultivate a strong team culture that emphasizes continuous improvement, simplicity, and thoughtful technical decision-making.
- Hire, retain, and mentor top engineering talent to support and maintain delivery excellence.
Product Ownership and Customer-Centered Platform Focus
- Act as the product owner for internal platform features, gathering feedback, prioritizing improvements, and advocating for the developer experience.
- Drive the delivery of developer-friendly tools and frameworks that accelerate product development and reduce complexity.
- Instill a product mindset in the platform team by delivering intuitive, well-documented, and reusable solutions.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Influence
- Partner with Product, Security, Compliance, and Engineering teams to align platform capabilities with cross-functional priorities.
- Promote and model modern engineering and DevOps practices, ensuring teams adopt automation, CI/CD, observability, and Infrastructure as Code (IaC).
- Influence technical decisions and ensure architectural alignment across product lines and business functions.
You’re a great fit for this role if:
- 10+ years of progressive engineering experience leading multi-team initiatives
- 5+ years of experience building and managing high-performing teams with a track record of consistently delivering and meeting roadmap commitments
- With at least 2+ years in the healthcare, digital health or health technology sectors, using Agile delivery methodologies
- Experience building complex software products within healthcare, payments and/or government settings, with demonstrable success.
- Experience working on technical projects with dependencies across multiple domains, teams and technologies
- The ability to dynamically respond to shifts in priorities, resolving contention and solving problems across teams
- Comfortable designing, building, and maintaining large scale systems
- Expertise in a high-level programming language (JavaScript, Ruby, Golang, etc.)
- Experience in web development (React (or another JS framework), CSS3, HTML5)
- Experience with AWS technologies

Environmental Job Requirements and Working Conditions:
- This position is remote, U.S. based. Strong preference for candidates comfortable working in ET/CT time zones
- This position may require 5-10% travel
- The target pay range for this role is: $200,000-$215,000. This salary range represents our target hiring range for this role. The proposed salary will be dependent on the candidates skills, experience, and competencies, as well as location.
- All team members will be required to pass a background check which includes criminal, employment, and education verification
