This role is a means to make a difference: you will play a pivotal role in strategically crafting the firms tax strategy and driving its implementation. You will collaborate with a talented, accomplished, and experienced group of colleagues from a variety of functions to help shape the future of the firm and work with talented outside tax professionals. As the primary authority on tax matters within our firm, you will oversee both corporate- and fund-level tax work and focus on research, planning, strategy, and implementation.</span></div><h3>Responsibilities</h3><ul><li><b>Strategy Leader, Advisory and Planning</b></li><li>Evaluate current tax processes at the firm, and those related to potential new businesses. Propose overall tax strategies to senior leaders and build out those strategies and their corresponding processes and controls</li><li>Assess tax risks, identify cost-saving opportunities, and demonstrate good judgment in counseling and structuring</li><li>Deliver tax advice on key issues (e.g., Section 174 and self-employment tax) to cross-functional teams including legal, finance, fund accounting, operations, investor relations, business strategy, and senior leaders</li><li>Actively participate in the tax planning of new products, trading new jurisdictions, and an expanded corporate and employee footprint</li><li>Oversee Voleons relationships with external tax advisors and relevant tax authorities</li><div><br /></div><li><b>Tax Research</b></li><li>Conduct research on complex tax issues that impact Voleon’s funds and management companies, including nuances of Subchapter K and partnership taxation, employment tax, and regulations in both US and international jurisdictions</li><li>Evaluate the tax implications of expanding into new markets and launching new products and advise on the structuring of the above</li><div><br /></div><li><b> Tax Compliance and Monitoring</b></li><li>Ensure compliance with all applicable tax laws and create appropriate processes and controls to monitor adherence thereto</li><li>Remain current on tax law changes, an evolving regulatory environment, and business needs in order to proactively reassess (and adjust as need be) the firms tax framework</li><div><br /></div><li><b>Tax Filings Review</b></li><li>Review and approve tax paperwork prepared by external vendors or internal teams, including Schedules K-1, K-2, and K-3 and 20+ partnership returns across 10+ states</li></ul><h3>Requirements</h3><ul><li>15+ years of tax experience gained from working with an accounting firm, law firm, tax advisory firm, or within the financial services or asset management industry</li><li>Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is required, and a J.D. degree is a plus</li><li>A strong understanding of technical tax issues related to hedge funds and ability to strategically and creatively apply that knowledge to practical, often ambiguous, business situations</li><li>Experience preparing and reviewing Schedules K-1, K-2, and K-3 and Form 1065 partnership returns for funds and investors both onshore and offshore</li><li>Experience preparing and determining elections for tax forms including 475(f) and 8832</li><li>A good understanding of the 871m withholding tax regime and qualified indices is preferred</li><li>International tax experience is preferred</li><li>Bachelors and/or advanced degree in Accounting, Taxation, Law, Finance, or related fields</li></ul><div>The base salary range for this position is $250,000 to $300,000 in the location(s) of this posting. Individual salaries are determined through a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, knowledge, skills, and geography. Base salary does not include other forms of total compensation such as bonus compensation and other benefits.
