About the Role

Join Target’s Product Safety, Quality & Regulatory (PSQR) team as a Director of Engineering supporting the Apparel & Accessories (A&A) division. At Target, we’re dedicated to creating products that are safe, high quality, and guest-loved. This role plays a critical leadership function in ensuring integrity across materials, design, and production for one of Target’s most dynamic and complex categories.

You will lead a team of engineers and technical experts to drive product safety, compliance, and performance standards in partnership with internal stakeholders and global business partners. This role combines technical rigor, business strategy, and enterprise collaboration to shape a proactive approach to product safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Team Development

  • Lead and develop engineers, fostering a high-performing, inclusive, and collaborative team culture
  • Provide coaching, career development, and feedback to enable growth, impact, and technical acumen across all levels
  • Set and communicate clear expectations around quality direction, PSQR objectives, and execution standards

Product and Material Integrity

  • Drive the implementation of engineering strategies for raw material compliance, testing protocols, and preventive quality for A&A products
  • Establish and execute category-specific risk frameworks, ensuring product claims, specifications, and materials are validated to be safe, compliant, and verifiable
  • Apply knowledge of raw materials, garment construction, fit standards, and manufacturing processes to proactively manage guest impact

Program Ownership and Execution

  • Ensure adherence to PSQR’s foundational systems, tools, and standards across teams and product categories
  • Monitor execution quality through key performance indicators and lead corrective action plans based on defect trends, guest feedback, or lab results
  • Support resolution of product withdrawals, recalls, and regulatory inquiries in partnership with Legal and Government Affairs

Cross-Functional Partnership

  • Collaborate with Product Development, Design, and Sourcing teams to embed safety and compliance early in the product lifecycle
  • Work with Responsible Sourcing and Packaging to advance sustainability and chemical compliance goals, including restricted substances management
  • Translate enterprise engineering governance into scalable, actionable tools and processes that align with business needs and timelines

Business and Enterprise Influence

  • Represent A&A engineering in enterprise initiatives and forums, advocating for product integrity and upstream quality
  • Participate in cross-functional efforts to align PSQR strategies with enterprise objectives and guest expectations
  • Leverage understanding of Target’s global and domestic supply chains to proactively address risks and drive consistency

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Textile Science, Industrial Engineering, or related technical or business discipline
  • 7-10+ years of experience in consumer product engineering, manufacturing, or quality assurance
  • Experience leading people and managing cross-functional initiatives
  • Strong technical knowledge of apparel manufacturing, raw material science, and product safety regulations
  • Ability to translate strategy into actionable plans and simplify complex technical information for diverse audiences
  • Proficient in applying Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), CPSC standards, Prop 65,ASTM and industry protocols
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability, communication skills, and strategic thinking

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing large-scale projects or leading enterprise-wide initiatives
  • Background in continuous improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma)
  • Manufacturing or factory-based experience (domestic or international)
  • Familiarity with third-party lab oversight and data-driven decision making
  • Strong influencing and stakeholder management skills within matrixed organizations
  • Understanding of Target’s end-to-end product development and supply chain operations

This position will operate as a Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement based on Target’s needs. A Hybrid/Flex for Your Day work arrangement means the team member’s core role will need to be performed both onsite at the Target HQ MN location the role is assigned to and virtually, depending upon what your role, team and tasks require for that day.
