This team builds and scales high throughput distributed systems. You will play a pivotal role in ensuring reliability, performance, and innovation in this critical part of our product.</div><div><br /></div><div>You will lead a team of backend engineers, collaborate closely with Product Management, Infrastructure, and Carrier Integration teams, and set the technical direction for a domain that has one of the highest throughputs out of all Shippo APIs.</div><div><br /></div><div>You will also work on streamlining the internal processes that are highly critical to customer and Shippo financials. This includes improving workflows, automation, and tooling for operational data management in partnership with product, finance, and carrier teams.</div><h3>Shipping &amp; handling responsibilities:</h3><ul><li>Lead, mentor, and grow a team of backend engineers</li><li>Foster an inclusive, high-performance culture</li><li>Define and execute the technical roadmap for the Rating API domain</li><li>Ensure scalability, low latency, and high availability of high-volume APIs</li><li>Deliver new rating features, including carrier integrations and advanced pricing models</li><li>Partner with Product, Infrastructure, and Carrier teams to align on priorities and improve performance</li><li>Drive best practices in API design, monitoring, and system resilience</li><li>Own SLAs/SLOs for Rating APIs and ensure operational excellence</li><li>Manage incident response, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement</li><li>Champion automation, testing, and CI/CD for faster, safer delivery</li><li>Streamline processes for managing rate cards and adjacent data to ensure accurate customer rates and correct Shippo charges</li></ul><h3>Requirements</h3><ul><li>Must have at least 3+ years of hands-on engineering management experience including managing deliverables, participating with product and design to define MVP, managing performance and growth of reporters and managing stakeholders</li><li>9+ years of experience in software developmentCoding experience in backend programming languages (e.g. Python, Go, Java, Ruby)</li><li>Experience working with Backend frameworks (e.g. Django, FastAPI)</li><li>Solid understanding of object-oriented programming and familiarity with various design and architectural patterns</li><li>Experience integrating with APIs that use REST, gRPC, SOAP and other technologies</li><li>Experience managing external vendors and integrations with 3rd party APIs</li><li>Exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills</li><li>Deep understanding of customer needs and passion for customer success</li><li>BS or MS degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience</li></ul><h3>Bonus</h3><ul><li>Coding experience in database languages (SQL)</li><li>Experience with NoSQL databases (e.g. DynamoDB)</li><li>Experience with queue technologies (e.g. Redis, Kafka, NSQ)</li></ul><div><b>Our Compensation <i>Ship</i>policy:</b></div><div>We believe compensation is a custom experience and are commited to fair and equitable compensation practices. The standard base pay range for this role is min is $175k to a max $238k annual salary. Since we are focused on hiring Shippos Everywhere, we have 2 US pay ranges, a standard compensation range for the majority of the US and a standard +1 compensation range for those who live in areas where the cost of labor is higher, such as NYC and California.</div><div>The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: financial budgets, work experience, training, transferable skills, business needs, and market value. The base pay salary ranges are subject to change and may be modified in the future.
