How you’ll have an impact at Paula’s Choice:  

We are seeking a strategic, driven, and innovative Director of Packaging to lead our packaging engineering team. Based in Seattle, WA with a hybrid work schedule, this critical leadership role will guide the development and execution of all packaging initiatives—focusing on new product launches, sustainability, and cost-savings—while ensuring exceptional quality and customer experience. You will collaborate cross-functionally with R&D, Product Development, Quality, Procurement, and Supply Chain teams to deliver packaging solutions that reflect our brand values and meet the evolving needs of our customers.

As a Director of Packaging, a typical day might include a mix of the following:

Leadership & Strategy

  • Lead, mentor, and inspire a team of packaging engineers, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Build and execute a long-term packaging vision that aligns with Paula’s Choice’s brand identity, sustainability goals, and operational efficiency.
  • Manage department budgets, project costing, and capital expenditures related to packaging development and optimization.
  • Continuously assess new technologies, materials, and trends to maintain a cutting-edge packaging portfolio.

New Product Development

  • Own end-to-end packaging development for all new product launches, from concept through commercialization.
  • Translate brand and product requirements into functional, manufacturable, and aesthetically aligned packaging solutions.
  • Ensure robust validation, testing, and compatibility across all packaging components and product formulas.

Sustainability & Optimization

  • Drive the brand’s sustainable packaging strategy with actionable initiatives: recyclable, reusable, refillable, and biodegradable solutions.
  • Identify and implement cost-savings opportunities across packaging materials, suppliers, and processes without compromising quality or sustainability.
  • Evaluate and report packaging’s environmental impact using data-driven tools and frameworks.

Quality & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead resolution of packaging-related quality issues by identifying root causes, managing corrective actions, and supporting cross-functional fixes.
  • Collaborate with the Customer Experience team to identify trends in packaging complaints and drive design or process changes.
  • Maintain robust packaging specifications, testing protocols, and quality documentation standards.

Cross-functional Collaboration

  • Act as the packaging lead in cross-functional product development teams, ensuring timelines, feasibility, and technical excellence.
  • Ensure packaging complies with global regulations, labeling requirements, and sustainability standards across all markets.
  • Collaborate closely with executive leadership, including Marketing, Brand, and Creative teams, to ensure packaging aligns with brand aesthetics while remaining cost-effective and sustainable.

The Details:

  • Location: Seattle, WA based. This is a hybrid role, with an expectation to work onsite at our downtown Seattle office 2–3 days per week.
  • Hours: Typical PST Business Hours, some flexibility
  • Physical requirements: Ability to handle both sitting and screen time for long periods of time

What you’ll bring to the table: 

  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Packaging Engineering or Mechanical Engineering
  • 7-10 years of experience in packaging development, with at least 3 years leading high-performing technical teams
  • Must have experience in the beauty, skincare, or personal care industry
  • Deep understanding of sustainable packaging practices, circular design principles, and relevant global regulations
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and align cross-functional partners
  • Strong financial acumen with experience managing budgets, cost analyses, and ROI assessments related to packaging initiatives
  • Experience working with global supply chains or contract manufacturers
  • Demonstrated success in new product launches

Approximate Salary Range Based on Experience and Location:

$130,000 - $150,000 USD/annually

Paula’s Choice Skincare determines the pay for positions using local, national, and industry-specific survey data. We evaluate external and internal equity and the cost of labor/prevailing wage index in the relative marketplace for jobs directly comparable to jobs within our company. Our posted salary range is based on national data and may be refined for a candidates region/town/cost of living.

For new hires, we strive to make competitive offers allowing the new employee room for future growth. The exact base salary is determined by various factors including experience, skills, education, geographic location, and budget. This position is also eligible for participation in the company discretionary bonus plan.
