Staff Human Factors Researcher (6 month fix-term)
$182k - $228kOura
At Oura, our mission is to empower every person to own their inner potential. With our award-winning Oura Ring and app, we help over 2.5 million people turn insights about sleep, activity, and readiness into healthier, more balanced lives. We believe that starts from within — by creating a culture where our team feels supported, included, and inspired to do their best work. Our values guide how we show up for each other and our community every day.
We are looking for a Staff Human Factors Researcher for a 6 month fix-term opportunity. This position is ideal for an experienced researcher excited to lead human factors work in wearable technology innovation.
You’ll drive research that directly informs product design and development—from comfort, fit, and ergonomics to usability and interaction. As a strategic partner across Industrial Design, Hardware Engineering, and Product teams, you’ll ensure our wearable devices deliver intuitive, comfortable, and human-centered experiences in real-world use.
What you will do:
- Lead human factors and ergonomics research across the product development lifecycle, with a focus on physical interactions with our Ōura rings.
- Plan and execute studies including anthropometric analysis, comfort and fit testing, physical usability testing, contextual inquiry, and use simulation.
Collaborate closely with Industrial Design and Hardware Engineering to refine product form factors, sensor placement, material design and accompanying software product implications. - Develop user research protocols, test fixtures, and data collection strategies for evaluating comfort, performance, and usability across a range of wear use cases and environmental factors.
- Deliver clear, actionable insights that shape hardware decisions and support product validation milestones.
- Contribute to cross-functional team reviews, design iterations, and documentation needed for future regulatory submissions or quality assurance.
- Act as a human factors expert and lay the foundation for this rich competency within Ōura’s interdisciplinary design team.
This is a hybrid-remote role, with the expectation to work from our San Francisco offices at least half-time.
We would love to have you on our team if you have:
- 6+ years of experience conducting human factors research focused on physical hardware, wearables, or body-worn technology
- Deep understanding of ergonomic and anthropometric principles and how they apply to real-world product development
- Expertise in usability testing, physical interaction studies, comfort and wear assessments, and translating findings into actionable design criteria
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary technical and creative teams
- Experience collecting and analyzing 3D anthropometric data (e.g., MRI, photogrammetry) to inform product design
Bonus Points For:
- Familiarity with CAD, 3D printing, or physical prototyping tools
- Experience with computational geometry or 3D analysis using tools like Python, Rhino, or Grasshopper
- Background in global user research and inclusive design practices
- Knowledge of physiological monitoring or wearable sensor integration
- Prior experience in consumer electronics, health tech, or fitness wearables
