We have offices in San Francisco and San Diego for those who prefer hybrid or office settings and employee hubs, including New York City, Boston, Los Angeles, Seattle, and more.
We are seeking a strategic hands-on Director, Embedded SW Engineering who will spearhead the design and development of firmware with a passion for innovation in the smart wearable technology space. The ideal candidate will collaborate closely with Product, Science, Electronics, and Testing teams to drive successful product releases. This role involves defining the firmware roadmap with senior management, planning resource needs, managing firmware architecture, and ensuring high-quality deliverables. The person will also mentor and grow a team of firmware engineers, fostering both professional development and technical excellence.
What you will do:
- Lead Firmware Development and Strategy: Own the end-to-end firmware development cycle for new products, from concept to release. Work with senior management to define a clear firmware roadmap aligned with business goals.
- Hands-On Technical Leadership: Lead the team of firmware engineers with hands-on approach on design, coding reviews, and optimization of firmware for our next-generation wearable devices, focusing on performance, power efficiency, and scalability. Champion best coding practices and high standards of engineering quality.
- Architecture and Technical Direction: Drive the overall firmware architecture and ensure it integrates seamlessly with hardware and software components. Make decisions on technology choices, toolchains, and development best practices.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with Product, Science, Electronics, and Testing and Member Experience teams to align on product requirements and deliverables. Ensure clear communication, timely feedback, and effective problem-solving across departments.
- Resource and Capacity Planning: Forecast project timelines, allocate resources, and manage budgets to meet delivery goals. Identify and address skill gaps, ensuring the team’s capabilities match evolving product needs.
- Team Management and Mentorship: Lead and grow a team of firmware engineers, providing technical guidance, performance feedback, and career development support.Foster an environment of continuous learning, innovation, and collaboration.
- Quality Assurance and Process Improvement: Establish and maintain robust processes for firmware testing focusing strongly on automation, validation, and release management. Continuously refine workflow to enhance team efficiency, code quality, and overall performance.
This position is based in San Diego and follows a hybrid work model. We value collaboration and innovation that comes from face-to-face interactions as much as we respect the flexibility and focus that remote work offers. As such, you will be expected to be in the office approximately 3 days a week. This balance is designed to support a cohesive team environment while accommodating personal work styles and commitments.
We would love to have you on our team if you have:
- 10+ Years of Embedded Development Experience and at least 3+ years in leading embedded teams, with a solid foundation in embedded engineering principles and hands-on experience in the wearable or related consumer electronics field, especially with memory and power constrained devices.
- Expertise in C/C++: Proficient in writing high-quality, maintainable, and efficient code in C/C++, with a deep understanding of microcontroller architectures and design principles for constrained devices.
- Agile Development Practices: Good understanding of working in an agile development environment, with excellent collaboration, planning and communication skills to work effectively with teams across different locations.
- Familiarity with Wearable Sensors: Experience integrating and optimizing a variety of sensors commonly used in wearable technology, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, and heart rate sensors.
- Knowledge of Power Management: Demonstrated experience in power optimization for battery-operated devices, ensuring longevity and efficiency of wearables.
- Experience with BLE and Wireless Communication: Strong background in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and other wireless communication protocols, crucial for wearable technology development.
