What’s the role?

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Seller Services team, you’ll be joining a team of software engineers, building features and systems that enable Etsy to deliver efficient, high-quality, and scalable support to our buyers and sellers, reaching millions of buyers and sellers globally.

The technology we build spans the full stack end to end; from user experience, to API design, backend service development, vendor integrations, and database design. Depending on the needs of the business, our team may need to move up and down the stack, and in many cases collaborate with other teams to get to what needs to be done.

As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be helping to drive the technical direction and strategy of the team, working closely with engineering managers, senior engineers and cross functional partners to design and deliver large scale technical solutions. You will ensure a high level of quality by leading by example, setting solid engineering standards and mentoring engineers at all levels.


This is a full-time position reporting to the Director of Engineering, CSS. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. 

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. The Seller Services team is part of the Customer Support and Services department that is focused on making support delightful, helping our customers (both buyers and sellers) love Etsy, and turning them into brand advocates. We provide support when customers have a great experience with Etsy and provide support when things go wrong - making it right. This department’s focus is on developing and maintaining the platforms, tools, and systems necessary for delivering a best-in-class support experience for our ever-expanding group of buyers and sellers.  The Seller Services team is an established squad of experienced Etsy engineers. The team drives an ambitious roadmap of projects that impact the Customer Support Experience and our customers within the Etsy Community.

Our team is a cross-functional group consisting of engineering managers, full-stack engineers, and application engineers, with support from product, research, data analytics and operations. This is a distributed team with members located throughout the US, Ireland, and Mexico.

What does the day-to-day look like?

  • Contribute at all levels; from front-end (HTML, CSS, JS, and Typescript/React), to API design and back-end (PHP, MySQL, BigQuery), and standalone supporting services running in containers.

  • Collaborate closely with engineering managers, engineers, product managers, data scientists, and machine learning engineers to design robust end-to-end solutions and incorporate industry trends that can drive business value

  • Set technical direction for your teammates, as a tech lead.

  • Participate in code and design reviews and maintain high standards of code quality

  • Mentor and guide junior and senior engineers.

  • Advocate for high standards; make quality-of-life improvements to the codebase; and help limit the growth of technical debt

  • Work cross-functionally with various teams for technical alignment and dependency management.

  • Hands-on experience integrating and working with Large Language Models (LLMs) and APIs

  • You are familiar with web technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScript etc.)

  • You are familiar with the PHP programming language
