Our team is responsible for building privacy-first engineering solutions, including data obfuscation, anonymization, and de-identification services that safeguard sensitive information without reducing platform usability.We are seeking a Software Engineer who will focus on designing and implementing data obfuscation services to protect customer identities, payment details, and other sensitive data. This role combines deep technical expertise with a strong passion for data privacy, security, and compliance, ensuring eBay can continue to innovate while keeping our users safe.<h2>Responsibilities</h2><ul><li>Design and develop services that implement data obfuscation, anonymization, and masking for sensitive customer data across eBay’s ecosystem.  </li><li>Collaborate with privacy, security, and product teams to define requirements that balance compliance, usability, and performance.  </li><li>Integrate obfuscation frameworks into critical systems, ensuring minimal friction for internal teams and customers.  </li><li>Conduct security and privacy assessments, identifying risks and applying mitigations to meet global privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA, etc.).  </li><li>Develop APIs and SDKs that make data obfuscation solutions easy to adopt across teams.  </li><li>Monitor and audit obfuscation services to ensure performance, accuracy, and compliance.  </li><li>Support incident response teams in protecting sensitive data during production issues or investigations.  </li></ul><h2>Required Skills</h2><ul><li>Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Cybersecurity, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).  </li><li>5–8 years of software engineering experience, with a focus on security, data privacy, or backend services.  </li><li>Strong programming skills in Java, Go, Python, or Node.js.  </li><li>Expertise in data obfuscation techniques: masking, tokenization, pseudonymization, encryption.  </li><li>Experience working with relational and non-relational databases (e.g., MySQL, MongoDB, Cassandra).  </li><li>Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and containerized deployments (Kubernetes, Docker).  </li><li>Strong knowledge of security and privacy principles, including regulatory frameworks (GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA).  </li><li>Experience designing APIs, microservices, and scalable distributed systems.  </li></ul><h2>Nice-to-Have Skills</h2><ul><li>Experience in Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) such as differential privacy, homomorphic encryption, or secure multi-party computation.  </li><li>Familiarity with data governance frameworks and compliance tooling.  </li><li>Hands-on work with monitoring, auditing, and logging tools to ensure obfuscation compliance.  </li><li>Strong knowledge of identity and access management (IAM).  </li><li>Experience building developer-friendly tools that accelerate adoption of privacy-preserving practices.</li></ul>Please see the <a href="https://jobs.ebayinc.com/us/en/talent-privacy-notice" target="_blank">Talent Privacy Notice</a> for information regarding how eBay handles your personal data collected when you use the eBay Careers website or apply for a job with eBay.eBay is an equal opportunity employer.
