The DR team is responsible for the core systems that safeguard customer data, including <a href="https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/stable/backup-architecture">backup and restore functionality</a>, <a href="https://www.cockroachlabs.com/blog/disaster-recovery-physical-cluster-replication/">physical cluster replication</a>, and <a href="https://www.cockroachlabs.com/docs/stable/logical-data-replication-overview">logical data replication</a>. These features enable customers to recover rapidly from catastrophic failures and protect against data loss. The team also owns and maintains CockroachDB’s distributed job system and the bulk ingestion code path, both of which are essential to database performance and scalability.</p> <p>As a member of the DR team, you will have a unique opportunity to work across the entire database stack, from the SQL layer down to the storage engine, to design and implement features that strengthen CockroachDB’s disaster recovery capabilities.</p> <h2><strong>You Will</strong></h2> <ul> <li>Contribute to the growth of the open source database, CockroachDB. </li> <li>Develop in Go, but if you dont know it youll learn while youre here.</li> <li>Help foster a collaborative culture and exchange knowledge with a highly experienced technical organization.</li> <li>Design and implement features for backup, restore, and replication to improve resilience and recovery times.</li> <li>Collaborate closely with Product, SRE, and Support to address customer needs and resolve escalations.</li> <li>Improve reliability, performance, and usability of disaster recovery workflows.</li> <li>Ensure that CockroachDB remains scalable, survivable, and consistent as we continue to grow as a company.</li> </ul> <h2><strong>The Expectations</strong></h2> <p>In the first month you will join your engineering team and start to learn about our production systems, software development workflow, and the architecture of CockroachDB. We believe that its essential for you to take this first month to become familiar with our technology, company, and our culture.</p> <p>After 3 months youll be a fully-fledged member of the Disaster Recovery team and comfortable contributing to CockroachDB. You will begin to determine the parts of our product that most interest you and work with your manager to focus your efforts on projects that align with your interests and our goals.</p> <p>As our team grows you will have the opportunity to shape the direction of development for CockroachDB. We want our users to have a phenomenal experience using our product and you play a crucial role in making CockroachDB a joy to use. We also offer technical training and experienced mentorship to help you learn and grow.</p> <h2><strong>You Have</strong></h2> <ul> <li>A passion for working on complex technical products.</li> <li>Experience working on databases, distributed systems, consensus, data replication, concurrency control, file systems or SQL processing.</li> <li>Comfort using programming languages like Go, C/C++, Java, and Python.</li> <li>2+ years of relevant experience.</li> <li>Experience building collaborative relationships with your colleagues. You enjoy being part of the code review process and partnering with your teammates on challenging problems.</li> <li>Strong self-directed learning skills, with the ability to ramp up on new technologies and codebases as needed.</li> <li>A BS in Computer Science or equivalent experience.</li> </ul> <h3><strong>As a bonus, you might have</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Experience building, running and debugging large-scale distributed systems in production.</li> </ul> <h2><strong>The Team</strong></h2> <p>You will work closely with our the engineering leadership team including:</p> <p><strong>Rima Deodhar - Senior Manager, Engineering</strong></p> <p>Rima joined Cockroach Labs in 2021 and leads the CockroachDB Application and Developer Experience organization, which includes the Disaster Recovery, CDC, and Migrations teams. She brings over a decade of experience in large-scale, distributed systems. Outside of work, Rima enjoys reading, cooking, and traveling with her family.</p> <p><strong>Isaac Wong - EVP of R&amp;D</strong></p> <p>Isaac is responsible for the health of the engineering organization at Cockroach Labs. He partners closely with teams to ensure we have a balanced culture that promotes quality and innovation in pursuit of our goals. Before joining Cockroach Labs Isaac was in life sciences for 16 years with Medidata Solutions where he had a front row seat on the exciting ride from a 30 person startup to more than 2000 people worldwide. But the lure of distributed, resilient, and consistent SQL databases, along with the amazing technology and culture at Cockroach Labs proved too much.
