Cedar

USRemote

Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S.

Cedar’s mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a “one-size-fits-all” approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.

The Role:

As part of our vision to fulfill the diverse needs of patients across the US, we are seeking a Staff Engineer to embed on various squads in the Patient pillar and lead technical strategy across the pillar. The Patient pillar is responsible for empathetically engaging with patients across various channels to communicate, gather information, and offer tailored options like financial assistance.

Were looking for someone with a strong interest in both the product development process and hands-on coding, who brings a do what it takes ownership mindset to this innovative and impactful work.

  • Cedar is committed to a flexible work environment, so this as well as many of our roles are remote-friendly.

In this position you will:

  • Lead the development of high-impact client projects within the Cedar Pay product, driving solutions from initial concept through to successful implementation. For instance, you might design and implement a new real-time communication platform to improve patient engagement, integrating with various external APIs and ensuring low-latency delivery of sensitive data.
  • Mentor engineers at a variety of levels (junior through senior), serving as a role model and trusted advisor for passionate and driven team members.
  • Independently identify, define, and solve complex, ambiguous technical problems, often with incomplete information.
  • Architect, design, and implement highly scalable, performant, and resilient systems, anticipating potential issues and designing for robust error handling and long-term maintainability.
  • Own key services relied upon by multiple engineering teams. For example, you will be directly responsible for the health, performance, and ongoing evolution of our core patient communication service, ensuring its uptime and reliability are maintained at 99.99%. This includes on-call responsibilities and proactive system monitoring.
  • Collaborate closely with your counterparts on the product, design, and commercial teams to understand patient challenges and formulate technical strategies to address them. Youll actively engage in technical discussions, providing constructive feedback and leveraging the expertise of others to arrive at optimal solutions.
  • Champion clear and concise communication of technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Drive org-level changes to improve existing processes, infrastructure, architecture, business problems, team well-being, and development satisfaction. Youll think broadly about opportunities to level-up the engineering organization. For instance, you might drive the adoption of a new architectural pattern across multiple squads, significantly reducing technical debt and enabling faster feature delivery across the entire Patient Pillar.

What we look for in an ideal candidate:

  • 9+ years of professional software development experience, with deep expertise in designing and building scalable, performant, and resilient distributed systems. You should have a strong understanding of trade-offs related to scalability, performance, and reliability.
  • Proven ability to lead large, complex technical projects that span multiple engineering teams and require cross-functional teamwork. This includes breaking down ambiguous problems into manageable components and driving solutions from concept to implementation.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. You can articulate complex technical ideas clearly, ask probing questions, actively listen, and effectively influence cross-functional decision-making by explaining sophisticated technical concepts simply.
  • A strong track record of mentoring engineers across all levels, serving as a trusted advisor and role model.
  • Experience owning business-critical applications, standing up complex new systems, and building for supportability and long-term maintenance. This includes the ability to debug intricate issues involving subtle interactions between multiple systems and libraries.
  • Proven ability to thrive and deliver results in a fast-paced, often ambiguous startup environment. Youre comfortable with a high degree of autonomy, proactive in identifying and solving problems without extensive existing processes, and can critically evaluate past technical decisions to drive strategic evolution.
  • Passionate about Cedar’s mission of improving the healthcare financial experience.

Compensation Range and Benefits:

  • Salary/Hourly Rate Range*: $216,750 - $255,000
  • This role is equity eligible
  • This role offers a competitive benefits and wellness package

*Subject to location, experience, and education
