This is a remote opportunity available to Canadian Residents who want an opportunity to join a Mainframe Development team at BMO. This individual understands the core processes of a business unit and its requirements, as well as the architecture patterns and technology strategy of an organization (e.g., Mainframe Modernization, Transformation, DevOps).  This individual conceives and writes detailed software design, environment documents, and code; while ensuring that their code/configurations adhere to security, logging, error handling, performance standards, and non-functional requirements. They create and modify software according to the software development life cycle and in alignment with architectural patterns and technology strategy as specified by the enterprise. They understand the implications of various components (including technology strategy & architecture) to the overall design of a program and the application within which it resides, and its overall impact to BMO’s technology eco-system. They evaluate new technologies for fit within the program/system/eco-system and the associated upstream and downstream impacts on process, data, risk (e.g., security). They work toward the objective of defect free software and deliver functionally that meets requirements and aligns with architecture. They promote the development of performant, reusable and sustainable technology assets for the Bank. They support the resolution of production issues and make recommendations that will improve BMO processes & systems.

Accountabilities

  • Understands BMO Mainframe environment and strategic goals and is an advocate for our mainframe technologies.

  • Stays abreast of industry technical and business trends through participation in professional associations, practice communities & individual learning.

  • Becomes an expert on BMO’s Personal Lending and Conventional Mortgage business plans and organization and works closely with other technology teams and our business partners to deliver changes that fulfil requirements and follow long term strategy.

  • Assesses impact of design decisions to the computer solution/product/service being developed (i.e. performance, schedule, budget, downstream component/system impact, quality, etc.) and recommends alternate/creative solutions for mitigation/optimization if required.

  • Assesses the costs and benefits for different solutions and recommend/decide on appropriate designs.

  • Identifies opportunities to strengthen the development capability, such as: sharing expertise to promote technical development, mentoring employees, building communities of practice and networks.

  • Devises new algorithms and data structures for target environment and platform attributes in alignment with architectural patterns.

  • Recommends or automates approaches to streamline and integrate technological processes and/or systems to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Exercises judgment to identify, diagnose, and solve problems within given rules.

  • Builds solutions that are supportable, scalable and achieve our aspiration of common assets.

  • Builds effective relationships with internal/external stakeholders and ensures alignment.

  • Interacts with key business & technology stakeholders to define, analyze, and deliver requirements that reflect the needs of both the business and end-customers.

  • Identifies emerging issues and trends to inform decision-making.

  • Conducts independent analysis and assessment to resolve strategic issues.

  • Monitors and tracks code and application performance, and addresses any issues.

  • Focus is primarily on business/group within BMO; may have broader, enterprise-wide focus.

  • Provides specialized consulting, analytical and technical support.

Responsibilities

  • Decomposing business requirements and translating them into detailed design specifications and code.

  • Designing solutions, writing code, performing unit testing, developing appropriate artefacts / documentation, and leading the delivery of solutions to production.

  • Recommending and implementing solutions based on analysis of issues and implications for the business.

  • Leading detailed code-reviews and providing feedback in a constructive manner.

  • Leading, managing, and implementing initiatives as required to deliver business objectives.

  • Supporting production issues, includes independently completing root-cause analysis and diagnosis.

  • Works independently and regularly handles non-routine situations.

  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Must have 3+ years of experience with IBM mainframe technologies such as; z/OS, CICS, COBOL, TSO, DB2, VSAM, JCL, z/OS Connect, etc

  • Knowledge or related experience working in a mainframe development or production environment supporting lending, credit, or investment applications.

  • Knowledge of software development practices, concepts, and technology obtained through formal training and/or work experience.

  • Knowledge of required programming languages and can code with little oversight.

  • Knowledge of technical/business environment and processes.

  • Understand functional aspects and technical behavior of the underlying operating system, development environment, and deployment practices.

  • Have facility with and understanding of the ecosystem that code operates in.

  • Deep knowledge and technical proficiency gained through extensive education and business experience.

Salary:

$60,000.00 - $111,700.00

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
